NMR LipoProfile® PLUS Blood Test

Helps determine the risk of heart attack or stroke

Description

This blood test is ordered from Life Extension®. Their doctors prepare the test requests for you to take to a LabCorp location outside of Maryland for your blood draw. The test results go directly to you rather than to your doctor. Results are received quickly and the process is fairly smooth! The cost of this test is not going to be covered by insurance but submission to your FSA/HSA account is possible (not guaranteed). It might just be a PITA to try.

From Life Extension®:
LDL, HDL and triglycerides are major risk factors for heart disease—but cholesterol isn’t the only threat. NMR LipoProfile® PLUS Blood Test measures cholesterol, LDL and HDL particle values, insulin resistance (LP-IR) and important cardiac inflammatory markers, C-reactive protein and myeloperoxidase. This panel now includes Oxidized LDL, an important measure of pro-inflammatory oxidized cholesterol particles.

This panel contains the following tests:

  • NMR LipoProfile®
    • Directly measures: LDL-P, LDL-C, HDL-C, HDL-P, total cholesterol and triglycerides.
    • Provides your ULTRA important LDL particle size and particle count.
    • An LP-IR score.
    • A helpful particle concentration and size chart which reveals CHD risk.
  • C-Reactive Protein (high sensitivity)
    • The CRP blood test measures your level of systemic inflammation and is used to evaluate your risk of developing coronary artery disease.
  • Myeloperoxidase (MPO)
    • MPO is a vascular specific marker that measures your body’s response to damage in your artery walls and the subsequent formation of vulnerable plaque which is prone to rupture.
  • Oxidized LDL (OxLDL)
    • LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) that has been modified by oxidation, triggering inflammation leading to the formation of plaque in the arteries.

Why should you get your oxidized LDL levels tested? The facts speak for themselves:

  • Individuals with high levels of OxLDL are 4 times more likely to develop metabolic syndrome in the next five years.
  • Increased OxLDL levels are associated with the presence of coronary artery disease
  • Levels of OxLDL increase in a step-wise fashion as the severity of coronary artery disease increases.

Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of both men and women in the United States! It is also the leading preventable cause of disability! If you don’t want to be numbered among these statistics, you’ll need to know whether your endothelial cells have been damaged, if your LDL particle count is dangerously high, or helpfully low, and much more!
